What was it like to be a civilian in Gettysburg in July 1863? Join Steve Mock for more in-depth stories of civilian experiences during and after the Battle of Gettysburg. Steve also tackles some of the legends that have become popular about well-known Gettysburg townsfolk.
Steve Mock, himself, has a colorful career, earning his PhD in audiology, working in that field for 40 years, serving in the U.S. Army, becoming a college professor and director of a hospital center. When he retired, Steve threw his energies into history—moving to Gettysburg, becoming a Licensed Town Guide, and a volunteer and board member of the Adams County Historical Society. His enthusiasm for history is infections, so join us for a lively look at life in Gettysburg in 1863.
This program is part of a series on the civilian experiences during and after the Battle of Gettysburg. Earlier programs (now posted on YouTube) include: “Close Calls,” with Linda Seamon sharing stories of residents who stayed in their homes throughout the battle and were in the line of fire; “Two Young Men of Gettysburg,” with Ted Hirt recounting the experiences of Daniel Skelly and Albertus McCreary, teenagers who witnessed the troop movements and devastation. Future programs will share stories of the farms and farmers after the battle, and the medical services that involved the entire town.
